Understanding Bipolar Disorder
At Rising Phoenix, we recognize that bipolar disorder doesn’t look the same for everyone. There are different types within the bipolar spectrum, and each presents its own challenges. That’s why our team takes the time to truly understand your unique experience—so we can create a treatment plan that meets you where you are and supports your journey toward greater balance and well-being.
Types of Bipolar Disorders
There are three primary types of bipolar disorder, each involving noticeable shifts in mood, energy, and activity. These shifts typically move between periods of emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
- Bipolar I Disorder is marked by at least one episode of mania—a period of unusually high energy, racing thoughts, or impulsive behavior that can last for at least a week or may be severe enough to require hospitalization. While many individuals also experience episodes of depression lasting two weeks or longer, a depressive episode is not required for diagnosis.
- Bipolar II Disorder involves a pattern of depressive episodes along with periods of hypomania—a milder form of mania. Unlike the more intense manic episodes seen in Bipolar I, hypomanic episodes may include increased energy, motivation, or mood changes, but they typically don’t disrupt daily life to the same degree.
- Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia) is a long-term mood condition marked by frequent shifts between periods of elevated energy and mild depression. While these mood changes resemble hypomanic and depressive episodes, they are less intense and may not last long enough to meet the full criteria for bipolar episodes.
Additionally, “unspecified bipolar and related disorder” to describe situations where a person’s symptoms are present, but they don’t fully meet the diagnostic criteria for a specific bipolar disorder (Bipolar I, Bipolar II, or Cyclothymic Disorder).

Risk Factors for Bipolar Disorder
The exact cause of bipolar disorder isn’t fully understood. However, research suggests that a combination of factors may contribute to the disorder.
- Genetic factors: Having a family history of bipolar disorder can increase the likelihood of developing the disorder.
- Brain structure and function: People with bipolar disorder may have a distinct brain structure or function.
- Substance use: Drug use can induce or worsen episodes in people with or without a pre-existing diagnosis. In some cases, symptoms may be temporary and known as drug-induced bipolar disorder.
Consult with a healthcare professional if you believe you’re at risk.
